when you have APD, it’s really hard to explain to people why you can hear just fine but still need subtitles lol. like it shouldn’t be but it is.

What’s ApD? I tried googling but nothing came up….

Audio Processing Disorder. there isn’t much information about it because it isn’t really well studied yet, and iirc it’s mainly studied in children. however, it’s a condition where your brain has difficulty processing language at times to the point where even if you have perfect hearing, you still can’t understand what’s being said.

For me personally, I’ve had my hearing tested, and it’s perfect. however, I often struggle understanding the words people are saying. it’s not a lack of comprehension as in following what someone’s saying, but rather the words may as well be in another language. or sometimes it’s a delay. Often during conversation I ask people to repeat themselves (sometimes to their exasperation), and before they even begin to repeat themselves, it clicks in my head what they’ve said. I repeat a lot of what people say as a consequence, and it drives them nuts lmao

I’m still trying to figure out what works for me to help me understand what’s being said because things like television or movies often give me issues, but well produced podcasts give me almost no trouble. music lyrics are almost completely out of my realm of comprehension most of the time. I don’t even try any more. everything sounds like that one band that doesn’t have real lyrics but some things vaguely sound like words? does anyone know who I’m talking about? or like that YouTube video “what English sounds like to non native speakers”. that’s how it feels sometimes. that video fucks me up good lmao

It’s actually kind of common in people with ADHD and autism. My brother has it, and a dear friend of mine has it. And there are occasions where I have it.
